about giclée editions
giclées are real art
Giclée prints are print reproductions of an original painting, but they are art. They are made to the highest quality standards, starting with high resolution digital photography, shot in a studio with lighting to accentuate the textural detail of the original painting, and a color-managed digital workflow. The resulting photographic files are printed by a master printer who has been making fine art giclée prints for twenty years. And the artist is hands-on through every step of the process, from extensive proofing to ensure the most accurate and pleasing prints possible, to the signing, finishing, and packaging.
archival quality
All of my giclées are printed with pigment-based, archivally rated inks on Hahnemühle acid-free fine art paper.
Archival means these prints will last 100 or more years under proper storage or display conditions. For the longest life for your prints, you'll need to frame them. Read more about framing.
giclées and original paintings
All of my giclée prints are reproductions of my original paintings. The originals are labors of love that can take many months to complete, and they range in size from relatively small to very large. The originals are fabulous, but because of weight, size, cost, and shipping considerations, they are not always accessible.
Offering giclée prints is a way to make my art available to a wider audience. The cost of the giclées is a small fraction of the cost of the original. In addition, they are smaller than the original, which can be an advantage when you have limited wall space and/or a large collection of art.
giclée sizes
Each original painting that I release as giclée prints will come in three sizes:
- a "mini" on 6x8 inch paper, and
- a limited edition in each of two sizes
The limited editions are sized to offer a "small" and a "large" reproduction, relative to the size of the original painting. The reasoning here is that I'd like to have the giclées "big enough" to see and appreciate the details in the original. Sizing for the giclées is based on:
- Original paintings under 20x24: an 8x10 and an 11x14 limited edition giclée
- Original paintings from 20x24 to 30x40: an 11x14 and a 16x20 limited edition giclée
giclée editions
the "mini" edition
The "mini" is the most accessible giclée option, always printed on 6x8 paper. This is an open edition, unsigned and unnumbered. It is printed on the same high quality paper with the same pigment-based inks as the limited editions. Includes embossed maker's mark and a certificate of authenticity.limited editions
The limited editions are an edition of 50, at each of the two sizes offered. These larger prints are intended to offer the richest and most detailed reproduction of the original art, because they are closer in size to the original. Each print is signed and numbered, and after they are sold out, no more limited edition prints from the same original will be offered. In addition to the handwritten edition number, title, and signature on the face of the print, these also include an embossed maker's mark and a certificate of authenticity.
pricing
Giclée prints are priced based on the paper size they are printed on. Image size will vary, depending on the proportions of the original painting. In general, you can expect a paper border of approximately 3/4" at the top edge of a print, equal borders on the two sides, and a paper border of at least an inch at the bottom (to allow space for the maker's mark, and for the signature and numbering on limited edition prints). The print image area and paper borders will vary based on the dimensions of the original painting.
Pricing for the giclée paper sizes:
- mini 6x8 open edition - $25
- 8x10 limited edition - $50
- 11x14 limited edition - $75
- 16x20 limited edtiion - $125
